Beginner tier list
This list answers one question: which class survives a new player's mistakes? It is based on starting health, attack range and built-in protection, plus our own first runs (a Warrior lasted 2:44, a Mage 0:41). It is not a ranking of late-game power.

Capstones by class
A capstone is the 30-point talent at the bottom of a tree. It defines a build, so it is the best way to compare what each class becomes late in its progression.
| Class | Capstones |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Mortal Wounds (Arms) · Bladestorm (Fury) · Titan (Protection) |
| Paladin | Light's Grace (Holy) · Hammer of the Righteous (Protection) · Divine Storm (Retribution) |
| Hunter | Bestial Wrath (Beast Mastery) · Kill Shot (Marksmanship) · Wyvern Sting (Survival) |
| Rogue | Toxic Bloom (Assassination) · Killing Spree (Combat) · Shadow Dance (Subtlety) |
| Priest | Penance (Discipline) · Chastise (Holy) · Shadowform (Shadow) |
| Shaman | Elemental Mastery (Elemental) · Feral Spirit (Enhancement) · Totemic Wrath (Restoration) |
| Mage | Arcane Power (Arcane) · Pyroclasm (Fire) · Summon Water Elemental (Frost) |
| Warlock | Seed of Corruption (Affliction) · Pact of the Annihilan (Demonology) · Butcher (Demonology) · Rain of Chaos (Destruction) |
| Druid | Force of Nature (Balance) · Dire Bear Form (Feral Combat) · Cat Form (Feral Combat) · Tree of Life (Restoration) |
Warlock Demonology and Druid Feral each offer two capstones; you can only take one of them.
How we rank classes
Early in an account, nothing protects you except starting health and whatever spell the first cards offer. A high pool (Paladin 245, Hunter 240, Warrior 230) turns a mistake into a lesson instead of a death. Range matters next: the Hunter can keep shooting while it walks away, while melee classes have to stay close. Built-in protection comes last, through spells such as Power Word: Shield, Frost Nova or Divine Shield and talents such as Cheat Death or Reincarnation.
Once a class has talent points, the order changes. Read each class guide for its strengths, then plan points in the talent calculator.
Paladin
The Paladin has the most starting health of any class (245) and opens with Consecration, a patch of holy ground that burns everything standing in it.
Read the guide →Hunter
The Hunter pairs ranged damage with the second-highest health pool (240).
Read the guide →Warrior
The Warrior starts with Cleave and 230 health, the third-highest pool in the roster.
Read the guide →Druid
The Druid starts with Wrath and 205 health, and has "the steadiest self-healing" in the roster: Rejuvenation, Regrowth and the Swiftmend milestone (a free Regrowth whenever you fall below 40% health).
Read the guide →Shaman
The Shaman starts with Lightning Bolt and 195 health.
Read the guide →Priest
The Priest starts with Smite and only 170 health, but its kit is built to stay alive: Power Word: Shield absorbs damage and is recast once it breaks, and Renew heals over time.
Read the guide →Mage
The Mage starts with Fireball and 215 health and has the biggest area damage in the game: Blizzard, Flamestrike, Arcane Explosion, Blast Wave and Cone of Cold are all in its 13-spell pool, the largest of any class.
Read the guide →Rogue
The Rogue is the fastest hero and the most fragile melee class (190 health).
Read the guide →Warlock
The Warlock has the lowest starting health (165) and opens with Shadow Bolt.
